With an ensemble of knockout stars— featuring Hunter Aldridge, Amy Bell, Jeff Burch, Ren Culbreath, Tristin Goodenough, Amy Haynes Rapnicki, Chris Kabara, Hunter Lubawski, Emily Machovec, Lucky Marino, Molly Mayne, Lauren Stuart, Bryan Thompson, Tod Wildason— you get an unyielding vivacity from this corps of talented superstars, making subtle moments pop all throughout their background scenes in addition to all of the phenomenal vocal work they’re putting into the larger group numbers. It’s high-octane intensity all the way with this ensemble, especially during those moments of full company engagement like “Raise You Up/Just Be” and “What a Woman Wants” where the women of the ensemble really get their featured moment in the limelight. Even though these ensemble performers are nameless in the script, you can tell they’re each their own person, living fully in the moments— even and especially when they’re quietly chewing scenery in the background; it’s just astonishing and fascinating to watch whilst simultaneously never truly pulling focus (at least not in the negative way) from what’s happening in the foreground of the scene’s action.

Narrator Amy Haynes Rapnicki leads the cast through her balanced, relatable narration. Rapnicki escorts the audience through the events of the show, using a professionalism of a typical narrator, with several well-placed comedic outbursts here and there to remind the audience that The Boy Who Lived is not the focus of this story. Her delivery and timing are excellent, often catching the audience off guard with jokes and comedic commentary.

Rapnicki, with her warm, knowing presence, grounds this frantic dash through the entire Rowling opus.

There’s an interesting juxtaposition of Snow White (Amy Haynes Rapnicki) at the party looking bored with a cigarette and a bunch of excited kids jumping around her, their parents all taking selfies with them. We can already see that this show is going to be entertaining.

Amy Haynes Rapnicki plays a variety of ensemble parts, but most notably the high school gym teacher not unlike some of the gym teachers we all remember from our youth. Hysterical!

The standout in this, though, is Amy Haynes Rapnicki as Paulette Buonufonte, the unexpected friend to Elle and down-to-earth, positive stylist. Haynes is a pro who knows her way around the stage and knows this character inside and out. She becomes this character and her natural delivery and authenticity shine through. Vocally, this woman has pipes! Her solid performance of her featured number, “Ireland” is stellar and one you won’t easily forget. You really don’t want to miss her performance in this role.

Transforming the role of Paulette Buonufonte from hyper caricature to realistic human, Amy Haynes Rapnicki delivers one of the most believably realistic performances of the production. Rapnicki finds the core of Paulette’s humanity and settles gently into that element, letting the scripted humor that is built around her character’s situation speak for itself. The subtle and human approach to the Paulette character really makes those moments— particularly during “Bend and Snap” when she achieves that “over-the-top” state of being, that much more potent. Not to mention the powerful, belting sound that Rapnicki delivers in that number. Her meet-cute chemistry with Kyle is adorable; the most impressive facet of her amazing performance is the well-maintained and subtle accent that she imbues to the character. It’s just a hint of ‘lower-class’ rather than the exaggerated, and often poorly executed, sound that gets attributed to the Paulette character. Rapnicki makes Paulette real, which sheds a whole new light on that element of the narrative.

Those who can’t do…bitch and complain about how they wish they could but hate teaching. That, in a nutshell (because this show is NUTS) is Miss Thorn (Amy Haynes Rapnicki.) And as the show says, there are no lousy songs, just lazy singers. And Rapnicki is far from a lazy singer, really belting her way through “Teaching Third Grade.” (Seriously, the musical should be called Ruthless!: The Show Where Everyone Belts All The Time.) With deadpan sarcasm that parodies and channels a great many stage legends before her, there is a bristly edge to her characterization that just adds layers and levels of humor to her performance that can’t be beat. When she starts talking through her cigarette, it’s hysterical. And her final moments on stage— complete with her muttered ad-libs— are to die for.

Rapnicki’s Ursula is another highlight. The actress has a marvelous voice, but it is accompanied by a characterization that portrays the villainess with just enough evil to hate her, but not too scary for the real small children in the audience. After her chilling, but very funny, version of “Daddy’s Little Angel” along with her eels, Flotsam and Jetsam, we look forward to their next scene. Rizzo and Patterson give standout supporting performances as the two eels, also perfectly balancing the evil and humor.

Amy Haynes Rapnicki takes on the role of the uptight, youngest contestant, Logainne Schwartzandgrunenierre […]. Rapnicki is a trip as this character and she has a very good comprehension of this character and plays her appropriately. Using an over-exaggerated lisp for the character, she still manages to get her lines out clearly and her delivery is spot on. Vocally, Rapnicki is a powerhouse and not only belts out her featured number “Woe is Me,” but also knows how to act the song making for a delightful performance.

Amy E. [Haynes] and Glenn Singer are a hoot as Cookie and Ernie. [Haynes] gets many a laugh from her back spasms, which force her to lie flat on the sofa, or to walk around the stage on all fours. She particularly captures the silliness when she gets everyone else on the floor to look for her earrings, only to find them in her hands. [Haynes] and Singer play an affectionate couple, making kissy faces across the room and using pet names for each other.
